YOUNG EAGLES PROGRAM

The Young Eagles Program was founded in 1992 and has provided more than 1 million free demonstration flights to young people. Through January 2004, young people around the world have participated in the program through the efforts of 35,000 volunteer pilots. Harrison Ford is the new Chairman of the EAA Young Eagles Program.

The Young Eagles Program’s original goal of flying 1 million young people ages 8-17 was reached in October 2003. To date 1,119,128 Young Eagles have flown.

The Young Eagles Program hopes to achieve a number of objectives. They include:

  1. Encouraging young people to become interested in flying;
  2. Providing young people with an opportunity to gain new perspectives on their community, their lives and the world in which they live;
  3. Raising awareness of aviation career possibilities;
  4. Helping young people understand the knowledge necessary to become a pilot;
  5. Responding to concerns that the nation's pool of pilots is growing smaller because of fewer new pilot starts and the number of pilots who are growing older--a situation that could cause a shortage of military and commercial pilots in the coming years.

Each Young Eagle participant receives an official Young Eagle Certificate, signed by the pilot, following his or her flight experience. The name of each participant is then entered into the World's Largest Logbook, which is on permanent display at the EAA Air Adventure Museum in Oshkosh, Wis., and on the World Wide Web at http://www.youngeagles.com.
